About Wayne Hutchins

Wayne Hutchins was born in 1951 in Sydney, Australia and is a graduate of Alexander Mackie CAE (now COFA, UNSW) and Sydney Teachers College. He is currently engaged in private studio practice with painting, drawing, collage, assemblage, digital imagery, photomontage, illustration, graphic design and sculpture. His work prior to this has included furniture design and manufacture, interior design and construction, product design, public and community arts projects, lecturing in universities and schools, extensive public speaking at seminars, conferences and public meetings, writing, publication editorial and research, cartoons, curatorial assistance, consultancies, landscape and environmental design, exhibition design and installations. He has exhibited in 35 group exhibitions (including Australian Perspecta 1985, Art Gallery of NSW) and 11 solo shows.

Wayne has sat on various boards and committees related to the visual arts and has also been a performer and musician with performance art, cabaret, original bands and recording. He was from 1986 to 1989 inclusive the President of the NSW Community Arts Association. He was a co-winner (1981) of an Australian Institute of Architects Merit Award for Work of Outstanding Environmental Design. He was commissioned by The Australia council in 1987 to research and write Artists at Work: Your Rights and Responsibilities: An employment guide for Artists and their Employers, which was launched by the Hon R.J. Hawke, PM, at Bondi Pavilion, NSW. He was the recipient of an Australia Council twelve month Professional Development Grant in 1987. He has been the President of the Ultimo Project Incorporated Artists’ Studios since 1996.
